The Black Entertainment Television Network (BET) has unveiled the nominees for the 2024 BET Awards, and it’s a big year for Nigerian musicians and actors. Several of the country’s biggest stars received prestigious nominations, solidifying Nigeria’s growing influence on the global entertainment scene.

Leading the Nigerian contingent is rising Afro-pop sensation Ayra Starr with three major nods. Ayra Starr’s compatriot Tems also made a strong showing with two nominations. The critically acclaimed artist earned a nod for Video Director of the Year for her standout visual for “Me & U.” That GuiltyBeatz-produced track is also nominated for Best Gospel/Inspirational Award, showcasing the spiritual undertones present in Tems’ music.

Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy continues his remarkable run of accolades, earning nominations in both the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist categories. The “Last Last” hitmaker will go up against mainstream heavyweights like Chris Brown, Drake, and Usher in those marquee categories.

Two more Nigerian breakout stars, Seyi Vibez and Asake, are representing the motherland as well. Seyi Vibez secured a nomination for Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act while Asake is a contender for Best International Act alongside French singer Aya Nakamura and South African rapper Focalistic.

The Nigerian influence even extends into Chris Brown’s hit “Sensational” featuring Davido and Lojay, which is nominated for Viewer’s Choice Award.

It’s not just the music categories being impacted by Nigerian talent. On the film side, Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri scored a Best Actress nod for her role in the comedy series “The Bear.” She’ll compete against heavyweights like Angela Bassett, Danielle Brooks, and Regina King.

Nigerian-British star Damson Idris also received a nomination for Best Actor. He received the nod for his lead role in the crime drama “Snowfall” and will face elite company like Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, and LaKeith Stanfield.

With these numerous nominees across genres, the 2024 BET Awards are shaping up to be a celebration of Nigerian artistry and entertainment at the highest level. The show airs live on June 30th from Los Angeles.
