Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Impactful Three-Day Tour of Nigeria

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, recently embarked on a whirlwind three-day tour of Nigeria, leaving an indelible mark on the country through their unwavering commitment to causes close to their hearts.
The tour kicked off in Abuja, where the couple received a warm welcome at Lightway Academy. Partnering with their Archewell Foundation, they participated in a mental health summit organized by the GEANCO Foundation, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being for youth and teens. Their visit to the academy concluded with a thoughtful gesture – the gifting of books about Nigerian heritage to the students.
Prince Harry then ventured to Kaduna state, where he met with the governor, Uba Sani, and paid a visit to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital. There, he spent time with courageous soldiers recuperating from their injuries, listening to their stories of service and sacrifice. The prince’s interactions with these brave individuals, some of whom he had previously met at the Invictus Games, served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit.
Back in Abuja, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle showcased their support for different causes. The prince participated in a sitting volleyball game with army veterans, while Meghan co-hosted a “Women in Leadership” discussion with World Trade Organisation director-general, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Addressing 50 women from various sectors, Meghan emphasized the importance of mentorship and role models for young girls, delivering a message that resonated with the audience.
The couple’s visit to Lagos was equally impactful. They met with the governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who praised their work on mental health awareness in the military. Their visit to Ilupeju Grammar School marked the unveiling of a partnership between Archewell Foundation and Giants of Africa, an organization that empowers African youth through basketball, education, and mentorship.
In a remarkable display of cultural appreciation, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met with three prominent traditional rulers: the Obi of Onitsha, the Oluwo of Iwoland, and the Olu of Warri. This encounter highlighted their respect for Nigerian traditions and their willingness to learn and engage with the rich cultural tapestry of the country.
The tour culminated with a cultural reception in Lagos and a fundraising polo match for “Nigeria: Unconquered,” a fitting conclusion to their impactful journey through Nigeria.
Through their engagements, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle demonstrated their unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Their visit to Nigeria not only shone a spotlight on important causes but also fostered connections and inspired hope among the communities they encountered. As they continue their work through the Archewell Foundation, their impact will undoubtedly resonate far beyond the borders of Nigeria, serving as a beacon of inspiration for individuals and organizations striving to create a better world.
