Why Bridgerton couple Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan couldn’t stop during the steamy carriage scene

Dear Bridgerton Fans,
The latest season of our beloved Regency drama has set viewers’ hearts racing with the long-awaited romance between Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton. One scene that has everyone talking is the passionate carriage moment shared between stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton. In a recent interview, the actors revealed a hilarious behind-the-scenes anecdote about that sultry sequence.
As Nicola recounted, the carriage scene started off like any other intimate shoot – she and Luke immersed themselves fully into the heated embrace between their characters. However, at a certain point, Nicola realized the kissing had carried on far longer than expected. Ever the professional, she stayed in character and delivered the line “Colin, we’re at your house!” in an attempt to organically transition out of the scene.
Luke played along seamlessly, replying in-character “Oh my God, we’re here. We’re at your house…can the carriage driver not keep on driving?” The two actors thought they were smoothly improvising a continuation of the scene. Little did they know, director Andrew Ahn had already called “cut” ages ago!
As Nicola and Luke revealed in the joint interview, the entire crew had been watching them carry on obliviously for who knows how long. When Andrew finally approached the carriage door, baffled by their prolonged canoodling, the actors were stunned to learn he’d been trying to regain their attention.
“We were like, what? He was like, ‘I was shouting cut, cut! And we just hadn’t heard it,'” Nicola recounted, admitting they were so caught up in the heated moment that the outside world faded away entirely. No matter how loudly poor Andrew called out, the soundproofed carriage prevented his voice from permeating their passionate bubble.
While certainly an amusing misunderstanding, Nicola and Luke’s commitment to staying fully immersed in the scene is a testament to their talent and professionalism. They so vividly embodied the growing intimacy between Penelope and Colin that even production cues failed to break the spell.
For us fans, that inadvertent stint of sustained smooching was an unexpected gift. We got to bask in the romantic culmination of Polin’s slow burn for just a bit longer. Their all-consuming chemistry radiated from even the smallest glimpses, so an extended look at their first taste of true love must have been sweet torture for viewers.
This story is one we’ll cherish for years as both a hilarious blooper and a beautiful illustration of the magic Nicola and Luke created together. Penelope and Colin’s love may have been a long time coming, but thanks to this delightful mishap, we got to savor it just a little bit more.
Sincerely,
A Bridgerton Devotee
